| The intent of
this course is to provide the student with an understanding of the basic
technologies that are associated with today's advanced e-commerce and
e-business delivery systems. The course has two components. A technical component provides the student with an understanding of the most important technologies. The second component examines applications of the technologies to various business problems. This is done through a series of real world case analysis. The course begins with an overview of a web development architecture and the technologies that comprise it. Next, telecommunications topics are examined. These include the fundamental components of telecommunications as well as issues related to survivability, maintainability, latency, mobile commerce, and emerging trends in this important area. With data being a crucial aspect of both traditional and web-based applications, a series of data management topics are examined. These include the design and development of database systems and the role of databases in target marketing, data mining, and strategic initiatives. Applications involving the management and use of large amounts of data are discussed. |
A current,
important issue in the management of data resources is whether and when to
outsource these operations. This is analyzed in terms of the challenges and
risks involved in the employment of application service providers.
Case analyses provide the students with examples of real world situations
where non-technical managers are required to make technology selection
decisions. Other issues include the enabling role of information technology
in applications such as on-line auctions and financial markets. |
